  1. I really like the atmosphere about your poetry, especially Tanka (Sandals) which is so light and sweet – what have you been influenced by?

    1. thank you! I’ve had a number of influences: Shakespeare’s Sonnets first inspired me to try my hand at poetry. Kenneth Rexroth’s wonderful translations from the Japanese and Chinese. T’ang Dynasty poets and Haiku Masters, The Beats (especially Ginsberg, Snyder, and the prose of Kerouac), Brautigan, Martial and Catullus. Bound to be more that I’m forgetting! πŸ˜‰

      1. Ooh Rexroth sounds especially interesting – but wow, I’m feeling rather deficient in my knowledge of poetry once again! I had to Google most of those. I really should sit down and read some poems for once, and these seem like good places to start!

  2. Perfect blog title, too. Wish I had thought of it first.
You are widely read, but my reading and yours are disjoint from each other. I have read Brautigan, oddly enough, when I was in college. Don’t remember him well. It strikes me you might like Flannery O’Connor – she may be the closest I have come to your taste.
    In any case, well-done.

    1. O Thank You! Just this morning I’ve started reading Helen Vendler’s study of W B Yeats and I’m feeling like a really wretched workman – so you have no idea how timely your kindness truly is!

  3. I found you on another blog. I really like that most all of your work is poetry, rather than free verse. That’s what i most like to hear, the melody of it. This is a really nice blog. The blue is also tranquil. πŸ™‚

    1. we talked with her doctor this evening, who said she needed to stay in the hospital at least another 2 or 3 days. (they’re giving her stronger IV antibiotics)… mostly dozing – they’ve given her a pretty strong pain killer.
