15 Jul 2017 – Now, But Only Now

That loathesome creature
needs no introduction, son –
we all can see it.
Each soul has one all their own –
a ceaseless, lifelong struggle.

Your secret plaything
you thought no one knew about
has marked your features.
Anyone with soul to see
can read the signs of sorrow.

You’re young. And stupid.
You believe yourself to be
the great exception.
Who keeps who there on that leash?
How long before it eats you?

All words of mercy
seem so senseless to a man
who sleepwalks cities.
Wake up. Someone calls to you.
Now, but only now, there’s time.
