22 Nov 2016 – Sonnet

The nations of the earth face down all fears
by shaking arms, parading through their streets,
proclaiming loudly – to whomever hears –
their might above the heavy tramp of feet.
But who’s the enemy? Can you name names?
You need a foe the folk will gladly fight!
No inner demons need apply! This game
demands that slaying someone makes things right!
The serpent slithers through the heart of town
where worthies stand, reviewing all who pass:
goose-steppers headed for the slaughter-grounds,
the eager pawns of Hades ruling class.
It’s just another day of life on Earth:
In love with death, uncomprehending birth.
