09 Aug 2016 – Sonnet
(for the 15th anniversary of 9/11)
Fifteen years and no, the world’s no safer.
No wiser, either. Simply joined in pain.
We once thought ourselves most highly favored,
immune by grace, and so this land disdained
the torn, tormented cities, bathed in blood,
the daily body counts of market blasts.
Aloof, we held ourselves above such floods
of common sorrows. That delusion’s passed.
The moon is not our home, we share this Earth
with sisters, brothers – but we know it not!
And though we’re separated at our birth,
there’s hope we’ll learn it in the time we’ve got.
My friends, this fool knows nothing but one theme:
that we are one, our proud divisions – dreams!
