19 Jun 2016 – On Following Foolish Dreams
A real man bares his bosom to the surgeon,
asking if his dreams are black holes eating stars –
mere multi-headed double-helix hydras,
fanged fantasies that only leave a soul in scars?
Sixty years spent seeking what I’ve yet to find.
Is it simple pride to claim my heart is good –
that God inspires every hope that’s therein lodged?
Finding follows searching – or at least it should.
I’ve knocked so many doors down where there’s no one home.
Asking – you can ask until you’re out of breath!
Can I safely trust the answer’s plainly “no?”
Save me from this hellish hope before my death!
