14 Jun 2016 – Strangers

We scan the heavens,
searching for a blip, a burst,
a cosmic message
we assume the skill to read,
which says “we also!”

We see a reptile
sunning on a desert stone:
cold-blooded, quiet,
watching us with lidded eyes,
in all things, strangers.

A gap of eons
ought to sober thoughtful souls,
and shame to silence
those who haul the past to court
for having ‘missed it.’
